A station on a heritage railway line will be closed for the next few months.

Broadway Station, the northernmost station on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, will be closed until March 4, 2024.

This is because of repair work taking place on the historic Stanway Viaduct.

Steam and diesel trains will still be running from other stations.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust is currently raising £1.5 million to carry out what it says are urgent repairs on Stanway Viaduct.

The 656 feet long, 50 feet high, structure has carried trains across the valley between Toddington and Broadway since 1904.

But the trust says a waterproofing layer of asphalt built into the viaduct has failed, causing decades worth of water damage to the brickwork.

The first phase of a restoration scheme, which is costing £300,000, will see the waterproofing layer replaced along the length of the viaduct throughout this winter.

Phase two of the project will see the brickwork repaired by skilled bricklayers over the course of three years, using scaffolding nearly 50 feet in height.

This second phase is expected to cost a total of £1.2 million - £400,000 for each of the three years it will take to do the work.

The trust is asking for donations as part of its Stanway Viaduct Appeal - you can contribute online at members.gwrt.org.uk/donate or by filling in an appeal leaflet, which can be found at Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway stations.

The railway has been nominated for two prizes at the Cotswolds Awards 2023 - best attraction and best place to go with kids.

Its Cotswold Festival of Steam has also been nominated for the best event award.

The heritage line has a Santa Express starting on November 25 and running until December 23.

Journeys to the ‘North Pole’ begin at Cheltenham Racecourse Station and run to Winchcombe Station, where families can walk through a winter wonderland and meet Father Christmas.
