John is county's new health supremo

AN Evesham councillor has been appointed the county council's first health supremo.

Cllr John Smith, who has just completed a year as chairman, will be the first cabinet minister for improving health on Worcestershire County Council.

He said his new role would entail him working closely with the Worcestershire Primary Care Trust and other health organisations to drive home the need for healthier lifestyles.

Cllr Smith, who is also a member of Evesham Town Council and Wychavon District Council, said: "I see this as a very exciting challenge.

"There is a growing emphasis on living a healthy lifestyle and we will be focusing on ways of getting that message across to the public.

"Although the post has only just been created, members have been talking about it for some time."

Cllr Smith's wife Frances, also an Evesham town councillor, is chairman of the Friends of Evesham Community Hospital.
